Boston Marathon 2016 Tallies 2,276 Injuries, 58 Hospitalizations
It's an inspiring day and a difficult one for runners in the 120th Boston Marathon.

Boston, MA - As of mid-afternoon Monday, the Boston Marathon has seen 2,276 injured runners, according to Boston Emergency Management Services.

The injury count is a small fraction of the more than 30,000 Marathon participants. Of that number, 2,218 were reportedly treated at medical sites along the course and 58 were seen at hospitals as of 4 p.m.

The 26.2-mile course can lead to injuries for even the most experienced runners. The 2016 women's champion, Kenya's Caroline Rotich, dropped out at the five-mile mark with an ankle injury Monday morning.

Weather is also a factor this year, with sunny skies and fluctuating temperatures.

Much has been made of the many public safety officials along the course, but as the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency head told Patch, runner safety (not just public security) is key to their mission. And in that quest, temperature is the real enemy.
As director Kurt Schwartz warned last week, "Don't forget the weather."
