Boston Police Officer Shot Wife Christmas Eve, Lied About It: DA

BOSTON — A Boston Police officer was indicted by a Suffolk County grand jury on charges related to shooting his wife in their home Christmas Eve while off-duty and telling first responders and investigators his wife shot herself, according to District Attorney Rachael Rollins Monday.

Korey Franklin, 33, of Hyde Park, was indicted Friday on charges that he mislead investigators. He is scheduled for arraignment on May 30 in Suffolk Superior Court.

The indictment alleges that the defendant made false statements to a 911 dispatcher and to responding Boston Police officers about how the shooting occurred, with the intent to mislead and impede the ensuing investigation. The woman was shot once in the groin and seriously injured.

He was originally charged in December with reckless assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling and misleading an investigation.

Based on a grand jury investigation and review of forensic findings, the evidence at present supported the single indictment, a felony under the Massachusetts witness intimidation statute. If additional information emerges regarding the shooting, the Boston Police Domestic Violence Unit and the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office will continue to investigate. Additional details of the evidence will be presented during arraignment, according to the DA's office.

The defendant, a seven-year veteran of the department last assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force, has been on paid administrative leave since the shooting.

"We take this incident, and all incidents that involve police officers, very seriously," Boston Police Commissioner William Gross in a statement in December. "This arrest clearly shows that the Boston Police Department has the ability to police ourselves and that we hold our officers to the same standards as the citizens we serve and protect."
