BOSTON, MA — A former Boston police officer was arrested and charged Thursday for his role in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, according to federal prosecutors.

Joseph Robert Fisher, 52, was arrested at his home on Plymouth, and will be charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer and civil disorder, the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia said in a news release.

According to prosecutors, Fisher entered the Capitol just before 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 6. During a confrontation between Capitol police and rioters, Fisher pushed a chair into an officer, prosecutors said.

"Fisher then engaged in a physical altercation with the Capitol police officer. Shortly afterwards, Fisher exited the U.S. Capitol Building," the U.S. Attorney's news release said.

Fisher was identified after he was seen in surveillance video wearing a New England Patriots Super Bowl championship hat, according to court documents. Investigators then matched the images with Fisher's driver's license photo and with his phone number, which was detected in the U.S. Capitol area on Jan. 6, prosecutors said.
