The first snowflakes of the season are still expected in parts Massachusetts Thursday night before unseasonably cold temperatures set in, but the the snow will likely remain west of I-495.

Forecasters said rain will start Thursday afternoon and "will end as a brief period of snow tonight across parts of the interior," the National Weather Service said. It'll be a gentle reintroduction to snow: less than an inch from Connecticut to Worcester and probably nothing east of that.

The rest of the state will see rain and a sharp dip in temperatures. The rain should start around 4 p.m. and last all evening in Eastern Mass., according to the simulated radar below. The snow will enter Western Mass. around 5.

After the light snowfall, there will be "unseasonably cold and windy weather" Friday. The low temperature will be 26 degrees around Boston, making for a biting end to the week. The "real-feel" temperatures at night will get down to 20 degrees, according to AccuWeather.

Temperatures rebound just a little bit Saturday, but the wind will die down. The next chance for a bit of snow could come as early as Monday night.
