Before the Marathon: Hundreds of Cyclists Take Over Course for Midnight Marathon Ride

As many as 1,000 bicycle-riding night owls sped through the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon course while the runners slept Monday morning.

Boston, MA - Hundreds of cyclists took over the Boston Marathon course in the wee hours of the morning Monday, riding the Midnight Marathon.

Organizers describe it as a "self-guided marathon on wheels," and it's become a big, annual tradition in Boston. The ride starts at midnight in Hopkinton, runs the full 26.2-mile course to the Boylston Street finish line and ends (for many riders) with an early-a.m. pancake breakfast, courtesy Boston Common Coffee.

Around 1,000 people RSVP'd to the event on Facebook, and attendees captured the low-light photos to prove it. Here are some of the best pictures from this year's ride:
