Special Election Results: Joe Boncore Wins First Suffolk and Middlesex District Seat

Boncore bested six other Democrats in a special primary election Tuesday to fill the Senate seat vacated by Anthony Petruccelli.

Boston, MA - Winthrop Housing Authority Chairman Joe Boncore is primed to fill the vacant state senate seat in the First Suffolk and Middlesex District, after beating out six competitors in a special state primary Tuesday.

Multiple reports Tuesday say Boncore bested six others for Anthony Petruccelli's seat, left empty when the East Boston Democrat left for a lobbying position in December. Boncore himself posted a "thank you" to supporters on Facebook about an hour after polls closed.

The other candidates were former Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo, Boston attorney Lydia Marie Edwards, Boston state Rep. Jay Livingstone, Revere City Councilor Steven Morabito, Paul Rogers, of Boston, and Asian-American Women's Political Initiative Founder Diana Hwang.

Because only Democrats are on the ballot, Boncore's victory Tuesday means he has unofficially won the May 10 election.
