Peter Parley’s Almanac, for Old and Young

Are you looking for an historical almanac that provides lunar charts as well as instructions on how to make a snowman? Then look no further than this month’s Collection Spotlight, Peter Parley's Almanac for Old and Young, which was published in Boston in 1837. Peter Parley was the pseudonym for Samuel Griswold Goodrich, a 19th-century author, publisher, and bookseller who also served as a member of the Massachusetts State Senate and House of Representatives.

As per its name, this almanac provides some extra details that make it accessible to a younger audience. In addition to the typical information about weather, tides, and lunar cycles, there are illustrations for each month and text that describes nature to observe and activities to undertake. While the version in our collection hasn’t been digitized, you can view the entire almanac through Tufts University’s Digital Library.
