Statewide Plastic Bag Ban Being Voted On This Week

The Senate proposal will override current municipal bans, and will charge consumers 10 cents per recyclable paper bag.

The Massachusetts Senate is discussing will vote Wednesday on a proposal to ban all plastic shopping bags by 2021. WGBH was first to report the bill, expected to be released Monday, which would override the ban found in over 100 municipalities and bring in the rest of the state.

Recyclable paper bags would cost 10 cents each for consumers, with 5 cents going to municipalities to promote recycling and 5 scents covering the cost for retailers, WGBH reported.

If the bill is passed Wednesday, it would move to the House when it gets back together in 2020.
