Watch that Exit Number! Changes Slated for Massachusetts Interstate Signs

The signs, they are a-changin'... eventually.

Boston, MA - A federally mandated update is en route to Massachusetts interstate exit markers, although the question of when remains fuzzy.

Per reporting from The Sun-Chronicle and The Telegram & Gazette, the state Department of Transportation hasn't put a timeline on the sign changes or done much press of any kind -- but those changes are coming. When they do, officials said, MassDOT will launch a public information campaign.

Massachusetts is one of few states that doesn't number all of its exit signs on interstates and major highways based on mileage. Since 2009, the Federal Highway Administration has been on a mission to hold those markers to a more uniform standard. Documents obtained by the Telegram & Gazette show work has been bid out for the contract to update Massachusetts signs, and was supposed to get underway in January.

But apparently, the paper reports, that information has not been widely communicated. More on that here.

For drivers, that means exit numbers aren't changing anytime soon, but best to keep your eyes on the road signs in the future.
