Brockton Mayor Orders Curfew, Violators Face Fines

Beginning Saturday residents must stay inside between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Repeat violators could face $500 fine.

BROCKTON, MA — The mayor has signed an executive order issuing a curfew and fines for violators of Gov. Charlie Baker's gathering orders in an effort to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. Those who disobey his order repeatedly could face a fine of up to $500.

As of 4 p.m. Aug. 22, residents must stay home between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., unless they are essential workers on the job or using emergency services, according to an executive order from the mayor.

Mayor Robert Sullivan also ordered that Ash Street Park and the James Edgar Playground be closed between 4 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily.

As of Aug. 21, Brockton had reported 4,547 people tested positive for the virus and of those 277 had died. The rate at which Brockton residents had tested positive between Aug. 6 and Aug. 19 was 3.5 percent. The statewide rate for that same period was 1.2 percent.
