Police Officer Shot 4 Times, 2 Men Dead After Brockton Standoff

BROCKTON, MA — A Brockton police officer was shot four times, another man was murdered, and the suspect shot himself to death Thursday night, Massachusetts District Attorney Timothy Cruz said.

Brockton and Massachusetts State Police are investigating the events leading up to an hours-long standoff, and everything that followed Thursday night.

Brockton police say they received several 911 calls around 5:45 p.m. Thursday to reports of a man with a gun and shots that had been fired near 62 Taber Ave. in Brockton.

Upon arrival, police found a man suffering from gunshot wounds inside a silver SUV, and as they were examining, they were shot at, coming under the gunfire from a second-story window.

One officer was struck four times.

The injured officer was transported to Boston Medical Center where he was treated and later released. The DA's office said the officer will not be identified.

Police say the gunman, Kevin Serpa, 32, hid inside his residence at 62 Taber Ave, where he barricaded himself for hours.

State Police were called in, and an investigation ensued on the busy street, setting up a perimeter while police negotiated with Serpa.

At 9:30 p.m., police say Serpa exited the house and shot himself outside for police to see. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:02 p.m.

Christopher Gomes, 28, of Brockton, was the man who had been shot inside the SUV, but police say he did not survive his injuries.

Massachusetts State Police and Brockton police are investigating the incident, but say it does not appear to be a random act of violence.

The City of Brockton took to Facebook, saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Brockton Police Department and our injured Officer."
