Brookline District Reaches Multi-million Dollar Settlement With Sexual Abuse Accuser
The woman accused a former teacher of sexual abuse from several years ago.
BROOKLINE, MA — The town’s public school district is paying a multi-million dollar settlement to the accuser in a sexual abuse case of a former teacher, according to a report from Brookline News.
Larry Chen was a member of the public school district staff from 2013 to 2018. He was first arrested in 2022 after the former student accused him of sexual assault. Chen’s trial was slated to take place in September until the accuser decided not to testify. Despite not testifying and therefore dropping the charges, the victim still maintained her accusations were true.
The settlement will reportedly have the district pay the victim $3 million in total, with $1.5 million paid in one immediate payment and the other half slated to come in annual installments of $300,000 for the next five years. The funds will come from Brookline’s Liability Insurance Fund. The School Committee, Select Board, and Advisory Committee have all approved the payment, however the settlement has only been agreed to and not officially finalized.
