BROOKLINE, MA — The police department celebrated the retirement of a superintendent after a 35-year career.

Kevin Mealy was appointed to the Brookline Police Department on Jan. 1, 1991 as an officer. The department highlighted two moments from his career that it felt were among his greatest feats. The first was in 1999 when he was an integral part in arresting a man wanted for double homicide in Atlanta after a shootout and car chase. The second was when he helped apprehend the “Spider-Man Bandit” serial bank robber years later.

“Over the years, Kevin (Mealy) received several letters from families thanking him for his compassion, patience, and kindness during some of the most painful moments of their lives,” the department said in a statement. “Those notes reveal what we in this room already know: Kevin wasn't only exceptional in high-risk situations, he was exceptional when humanity and empathy were needed most.”
