PHOTOS: Images of the Artwork Stolen from the Gardner Museum

Twenty-three years ago, thirteen masterpieces were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. There's currently a $5 million reward for their return.

In what's considered one of the biggest art heists in U.S. history, 13 masterpieces were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990.

Twenty-three years later, the FBI has announced they know who did it, but they don't know the whereabouts of the art. They have since appealed to the public to offer tips, dangling a $5 million reward from the museum and potential immunity from prosecution the U.S. Attorney Carmen Oritz.

The original theft occurred early on the morning after St. Patrick's Day, when two thieves dressed as police officers gained access to the museum, bound the security guards and made off with 13 paintings in total, including works by Rembrandt, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet and rare work by Vermeer. Estimates have placed the value of the missing paintings worth more than $500 million.
