As a result of recent bicycle thefts and home break-ins, Brookline Police were on a directed patrol in an unmarked car and plain clothes at about 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 1 near Harvard Street and Aspinwall Avenue.
While traveling on Harvard Street near Webster Place, officers saw two men on a motor scooter who seemed startled by the presence of the officers and picked up their speed to reach the intersection of Harvard Street and Aspinwall Avenue.

Officers noted that the two men continued to act suspicious as they trailed three to four car lengths behind the scooter. When the suspects looked back and saw the officers, they doubled back on an illegal U-turn on Harvard Street. The suspects headed west on Beacon Street and went through a red light. The officer decided to pull them over given the traffic infractions.
An officer tried to stop the scooter, but the driver went around him and headed into Brookline Village. The driver crashed into a Lexus at the corner of Davis Avenue and Washington Street. The driver got up and took off on foot, but was arrested at 10 Brookline Place. The passenger was not arrested.

Officers examined the scooter and found a pair of pliers and a damaged ignition system.
Rodney Fitzgerald, 29, of 32 Marcella Street, Boston was charged with failure to stop for police, receiving a stolen vehicle, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
