What To Know About Green Electricity Changes In Brookline
A company called Direct Energy will be taking over when it comes to providing green energy options for Brookline, town officials said.

BROOKLINE, MA — If you are part of The Brookline Green Electricity program, which allows residents and businesses to buy electricity in bulk and from renewable sources, officials want you to know there's been a change. The town has a new green electricity supplier called Direct Energy.
They won't knock on your door, but you may have gotten a letter in the mail from the town about them.
Here's what's going on: The state-approved Community Electricity Aggregation program, begun in 2017, allows Brookline people to purchase electricity in bulk, which, the town says means monthly savings, stable rates and additional renewable energy products. The supplier of that energy has, until now, been Dynegy.

However, after a competitive bid process the town selected Direct Energy Services rather than Dynegy as its retail electricity supplier for a 35-month term, ending in December 2022.
Town officials say residents don't need to change anything, but should be aware that with the new supplier come a few new options, and sent out a mailer at the beginning of January to let participants know they can choose to change their current selection, or opt out any time without a fee.

Eversource will continue to deliver the electric supply to households and businesses, handle billing, and remain the contact for emergencies and outages, but through Direct Energy Brookline customers will now have the option of four different products with varying amounts of New England – generated renewable energy.
As of December 2019, there were 18,086 customers in the program, which is 62.6 percent of all electric accounts in Brookline, according to town officials.
