Harvard Square Redevelopment Debate Tabled Until October

Owner of Curious George Store, which renderings suggest would have to move, described a packed house at the Thursday meeting.

CAMBRIDGE, MA — The Cambridge Historical Commission hit pause on its discussion on the proposed redevelopment of one of Harvard Square's most prominent retail centers, tabling the topic after a five-hour meeting Thursday.

That's according to Adam Hirsch, owner of the World's Only Curious George Store, a children's book shop that could need to relocate, according to proposed renderings from Harvard Collection developer Equity One.

Hirsch described a standing room-only crowd, with debate centering on the aesthetics of the proposed redevelopment. Hirsch is largely an observer for now, waiting to see what his options are for his store. The shop features prominently at the busy confluence of Mass Ave., Brattle Street and John F. Kennedy Street, and is one of several stores in the would-be "Harvard Collection" building. Other tenants include Urban Outfitters and the satirical law offices of Car Talk's "Dewey, Cheatem & Howe," whose window faces the street, just above the Curious George Store.
