📰 News we're reading

1. City council wants quicker access to body cam footage (cambridgeday.com) — Cambridge city councillors are pressing police and city officials to release body camera footage from high-profile incidents in Central and Harvard squares much faster than the current 30-day goal. They’re especially focused on video from an August machete incident at 243 Broadway and a protest over the war in Gaza, arguing that quicker disclosure is essential for transparency even as police cite privacy and ongoing investigations.

2. Founding editor Marc Levy has left Cambridge Day, the news outlet he launched in 2009 (dankennedy.net) — Cambridge residents should know that Marc Levy, founding editor of Cambridge Day and a key figure in local coverage as other outlets shrank, has resigned effective immediately. New editor-in-chief Michael Fitzgerald says the nonprofit-backed publication will now double down on covering as much of Cambridge as possible while building on Levy’s legacy of community journalism.

3. Stories That Brightened 2025: Reunions, Recoveries, And Random Acts Of Kindness (dallasexpress.com) — One bright spot for Cambridge this year came from the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, where researcher David Liu called 2025 a breakthrough year for gene editing, including promising Huntington’s disease therapy results. His work is featured alongside global good-news stories, from endangered sea turtles rebounding to shrinking ozone holes, celebrity generosity, and inspiring personal achievements that closed out 2025 on a hopeful note.

4. Lexington native, UK graduate won a 1976 Nobel Prize in chemistry (kentucky.com) — A famed chemist who spent his later years living in Cambridge once used x-rays and quantum mechanics to reveal how boron-based molecules are structured, work that earned him the 1976 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Born in Ohio and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, William Lipscomb studied at the University of Kentucky and later taught at Harvard until 1990, remaining in Cambridge until his death in 2011.

5. ‘It's hard, for sure': Family honors fallen officer, husband, father with Christmas celebration (bostonherald.com) — A Cambridge-based National Grid worker killed alongside Waltham Officer Paul Tracey is among those being remembered as their families navigate a second Christmas without them. The story follows Tracey’s widow and children as they honor his memory, prepare for her return to the Waltham police force, and stay closely connected with the Cambridge victim’s family while awaiting a 2026 trial.
