Kennedy is running against Ed Markey for Markey's U.S. Senate seat.

Cambridge police later sent a series of tweets apologizing for the earlier tweet, saying a member of the department with access to the Twitter account "inadvertently posted political commentary on the department account rather than their personal account, that was inappropriate, unprofessional and disrespectful."

"While the post was quickly removed, the concerning statements cannot be erased," the following tweet read.

Police also apologized to Kennedy and said it will take "appropriate action," but did not specify.
