CAMBRIDGE, MA — The annual city dance party to celebrate summer is back. And with it Massachusetts Avenue, from Prospect to Lee streets, will be closed to traffic but open for dancing between 6 p.m. and midnight on June 28.

The number one MBTA bus line will also be rerouted between Central and Harvard squares from 6 p.m. to midnight as Central Square turns into a massive dance party.

How massive? Thousands will gather on Massachusetts Avenue in front of Cambridge City Hall (795 Massachusetts Ave.) from 7-11 p.m. The party basically involves a DJ, colorful lights, and thousands of dancing folks packing the area in front of City Hall. The idea came about in 1996 as part of the 150th anniversary celebration of Cambridge. Since then, the party has returned each year.

Officials encourage folks to take the Red Line to Central Square and walk the few blocks to dance. Last year the party was mostly a success, according to officials. On one occasion near the end of the night, the DJ stopped the music to encourage an enthusiastic dancer to get off of the top of a bus shelter, or he would end the night early.
