The Neponset Valley Philharmonic Orchestra

The Neponset Valley Philharmonic Orchestra will present its final concert of the season, “Russian Favorites”, on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 3 p.m. at King Philip Regional High School, 201 Franklin Street, Wrentham.

The concert features the enigmatic and well-loved symphonic staple Symphony No. 5 in D Minor by Dmitri Shostakovich.  Written in 1937, this symphony was Shostakovich’s only way to save his art and his life in Stalinist Russia.

Also on the program is Malcolm Arnold’s Tam o’Shanter Overture, rollicking music telling the story of a man who stayed too long at the pub, based on the poem by Robert Burnes.  Also featured is Reinhold Glière’s Harp Concerto, Op. 74 with the beautiful and talented young New England harpist, Colleen Potter Thorburn.
