Charlestown Water Park Wasting Both Money and Water

The Charlestown Navy Yard Spray Park is costing the city of Boston $250,000 in water bills each year.

The Charlestown Navy Yard Spray Park was built to keep kids cool amid unbearable summer temperatures, but it’s costing the city of Boston big time. The water is running both day and night.

According to Hank Phillippi Ryan, the steady flow of water at the park is racking up a bill of $250,000 each year.

The water system at the park is designed to only spray water on demand. Ryan says the water continues to spray for extended periods of time when it’s supposed to shut off to prevent wasted money and water.

Ryan informed the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) about the issue over a year ago, but night after night throughout the summer, the water has still been spraying around with no one at the park.

Park overseers blame mechanical issues for the wasted water. Nicholas Martin of the BRA told Ryan that the city regrets allowing the water to run overnight.
