Menino Approves Redistricting Map
The Boston City Council submitted three maps to the mayor, with the first two being vetoed.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino approved the redistricting map and the new districts will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014.

Charlestown remains in District 1, which added a couple of precincts.
The council supported the new map, 11-2. The first two maps approved by the Boston City Council barely passed the council, 7-6, on both maps. Menino vetoed those maps, and on both occasions citing, "over-concentration of protected groups" in districts.

Legally speaking, the Boston City Council district map does not need to be approved by the state legislature or governor to become law. Once the map is approved by the council and mayor it becomes effective, according to Boston's City Charter.
Boston is required to redraw council districts determined by the most recent U.S. Census statistics.
The current districts, as approved in 2002, will remain in effect until the end of 2013. The 2013 municipal election would be based upon the new district configuration.
