Election Prayer Vigil To Provide Silence And Support Today

Need a minute? Everyone is welcome to join the All Saints Episcopal Church's Election Prayer Vigil from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

DANVERS, MA – In an effort to quell the anxiety of the presidential election, All Saints Episcopal Church of the North Shore is holding an Election Prayer Vigil on Monday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

All Saints Rev. Marya DeCarlen said the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts asked all parishes to hold a similar event around Election Day, so people can have a space to hold prayer for the election, regardless of the vote they cast.

"I think that what’s happened with this particular election is that people are holding so much anxiety from hearing the blame and shame game in their own living room," said DeCarlen. "Instead of demonizing others, I think our call is to listen and be present, respectful, inclusive, and supportive and that’s what we’re trying to do."

From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., anyone can go to All Saints at 46 Cherry St., Danvers, to sit and be silent in a peaceful place. A unity candle will be lit on the altar, and there will be a basket where attendees can offer written prayers. From 7 to 7:30 p.m. the parish will offer a "service of light." The service will be live streamed on the All Saints Episcopal Church Facebook page.

DeCarlen said she thinks everyone has been exposed to an unusual amount of negativity through the political ads, debates, and commentary surrounding this election. Those who don't regularly attend church are also welcome – if only to get away from their TVs.

"It’s not denominational," said DeCarlen. "It’s simply a place for any citizen to sit and be and feel supported and cared for."

"We hope that if people come they will feel a sense of peace," she said.
