Once-a-Year Hazardous Waste Day in Danvers on Sept. 26

The Town of Danvers will conduct a hazardous waster collection from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Danvers Transfer Station on East Coast Road off Route 1 South.

Clean Harbors has been selected as the contractor. This is NOT a curbside collection - you must bring your materials to the Transfer Station.

It’s as simple as popping your trunk, according to town officials.

This collection is for Danvers residents only, and identification is required.

No commercial waste will be accepted. Commercial vehicles will be turned away – this is a residential event. Last year we served 275 households. We will accept: fertilizers, pesticides, pool chemicals, art supplies, photography chemicals, antifreeze, waste oil (up to 5 gallons), gasoline, household cleaners, drain cleaner, oil based paints and stains. Danvers officials will NOT take car tires or batteries, NiCad or Lithium batteries or fluorescent bulbs on this day – they can be brought to the Transfer Station during regular business hours. Alkaline batteries A-D can be thrown in the trash. We will NOT collect electronics because they are picked up curbside with bulk item stickers and will also be collected at Danvers’ Zero Waste Weekend Recycling Event on Nov. 7 and 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Danvers High School parking lot at 60 Cabot Road.

REMEMBER: Latex paint can be dried out (add kitty litter or paint hardener) and discarded at the Transfer Station during regular business hours. We are asking residents to be particularly astute when it comes to paint. NO LATEX PAINT WILL BE ACCEPTED AT THIS EVENT. Only oil based paint will be collected on this day.

Important to note is that the Transfer Station is open on Saturdays for residential and commercial use. Trash and yard waste drop off is allowed (with a prepaid sticker), however it must be separate from your household hazardous waste. You must stay in the line to the right for HHW Day unless directed otherwise by Transfer Station or DPW staff.

You’ll have four check points during this drop off event – please do not get out of your car

Please stay in a single line to the right. Upon entering the Transfer Station, commercial vehicles will be directed over the scale. The first stop is at the entrance to show your Danvers ID. On the way up the hill there will be a check point where you’ll receive handouts and you can ask questions. Stop at the top of the hill where DPW staff will be standing and pop open your trunk so we can see how much hazardous waste you have – that’s how the Town is charged. You will then be directed to Clean Harbors where they will take your items out of your open trunk and car. Please do not get out of your car. They will handle everything and return your containers if you need them. Slowly drive around the building, down the hill, and exit the Transfer Station.
