Yesterday, Framingham Public Works Director of Water and Wastewate Blake Lukis presented a thought-provoking demonstration about water use to approximately 100 fourth grade students at the Wilson Elementary School.

He showed the students a piece of a wooden tree trunk that served as an early water distribution system in Boston as well as an iron pipe that was more than 75 years old that showed signs of wear.

β€œFramingham was first settled because of its abundance of clean, usable water resources. Today, we have worldwide biotech corporations and even craft breweries located here for the very same reason. With less than 1 percent of the earth’s water available for drinking, everyone needs to appreciate its value and protect it,” said Lukis.

Framingham, like many towns across the country, has water pipes that are more than 100 years old even though they were meant to last only half of that.

Going a day without water would be a hardship on residents and businesses in our community and educating ourselves on water conservation should be a priority.

β€œWe are thrilled that Framingham Public Works is joining Imagine a Day Without Water. The truth is, of course, we can’t go a day without water. For homes, that would mean no water to take a shower, make coffee, clean, do laundry, or flush the toilet. For businesses from restaurants to manufacturing plants, water is essential to daily operations,” said Radhika Fox, Director of the Value of Water Coalition, in a press release. β€œDuring Imagine a Day Without Water, we’re speaking with one voice across the nation about how water is essential, invaluable, and needs investment.”
Framingham must continue to invest in its water infrastructure for the health and safety of our future generations.
