On Sunday Oct. 18, the Framingham Flyers faced the Brockton Raiders.
This was the final regular season home game at the Framingham State University field for the Flyers so the fans, players, coaches, and volunteers were eager to soak in the experience.
Framingham began the game with a smart and strategic play when they recovered an onside kick. They then moved downfield by throwing the ball as quarterback Jack Beverley completed a 10-yard pass to Sam Stubbs and a 35-yard pass to Matt Giovine. Beverley then switched roles at the goal line and caught a touchdown as a wide receiver that was thrown by Andrew Keane. Sam Stubbsβ 2 point kick made the score 8-0.
On defense, Matt Giovine swatted away a Brockton pass and Shane Ayotte had a sack. Later, Christian Maldonado picked up a fumble by the Raiders at Brocktonβs 14-yard line. This allowed Beverley to throw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Sam Stubbs.
Early in the 2nd quarter, Maldonado made another key defensive play by blocking Brocktonβs punt. Framingham now had the opportunity to go up by three touchdowns as they were near the goal line, and they did exactly that. Jack Beverley ran for a short touchdown to make the score 22-0 and Beverley had now scored every single type of offensive touchdown (pass, catch, and run).
However, he and his team refused to slow down and kept playing hard throughout the half. Warren Perez had a fumble recovery, Matt Giovine had an interception, and the Flyers had a huge lead going into halftime.
On the 1st play after halftime, Framingham continued to shock the crowd.
The entire Brockton team tried to tackle Beverley but failed to do so as he wove through the defense and ran for a 50 yard touchdown.
However, Brockton finally ended the shutout with a 10-yard touchdown run near the end of the 3rd quarter.
Another touchdown pass by Brockton made the score 30-13 early in the 4th quarter.
Despite Brocktonβs attempted comeback, Framingham held on to their lead and won 30-13. The whole team had stellar performances on offense, defense, and special teams during the game.
Thanks to all players, coaches, parents, and volunteers for making this a great year of football.
This was the final regular season game, but the grade 8 team will have a playoff game on Wednesday.
