SLIDESHOW: Framingham Splashes to Seventh Win of the Season

The Framingham High swim and dive team defeated the Rebels of Walpole Tuesday afternoon.


The Framingham High swim & dive team splashed to its seventh victory of the season on Tuesday.

The Flyers defeated the Rebels of Walpole 97-84, at Keefe Technical’s pool in Framingham.

The team’s depth in several strokes and its strong relay teams were the keys to the victory.

The Flyers are now 7-2-1, with an away meet against swimming power Acton-Boxboro on Friday night.

The Flyers swept the diving competition, finishing 1-2-3.

Sophomore Halia Bower won the event, with sophomore Catherine Turner second and senior Elena Jacob third.

Walpole’s Padraic Curran won the sprint event in 25.25 seconds, but Framingham finished second, third, and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle. Junior Alessandra Miranda was second, Bella Tersoni finished third and Emily Osborne took fourth.

β€œDeep sweeps helped the team a lot,” said head coach Mike Foley.

Curran won the 100-yard freestyle for Walpole in 58.28 seconds, but Framingham again had a deep sweep finishing second-third and fourth. Senior Devon Tice was second, Miranda third and sophomore Olivia Nelson was fourth.

In the distance event, Framingham senior Haley McCurdy won the 500-yard freestyle, in a time that qualifies her for the state meet. Senior Natalie Burkett finished second and freshman Casey Libuda finished fourth, in her first time swimming the event in competition.

Sophomore Kara McCurdy won the 200 individual medley event. Seniors Aja Matzker ad Burkett finished fourth and fifth for the Flyers.

Nelson won the 100-yard backstroke for Framingham, with a time of 1:09.47. Matzker finished second for Flyers.

Walpole’s Julie Hinton won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:19.50, but Framingham again finished strong taking second, third, and fourth place. Sophomore Lizzy Tallino finished second, Osborne captured third and senior Stefanie Evans took fourth.

Andrew Gubanov won the 100-yard butterfly, with a state qualifying time of 1:02.28.

Framingham’s Kara McCurdy finished a strong second, also with a state qualifying time. Senior Anna Parra finished third for the Flyers, with junior Shelby Weeks fifth.

Editor’s note: Boys are allowed to compete on girls swim teams if the high school does not have a boys team in the winter season.

Senior Devon Tice finished second to Gubanov in the 200-yard freestyle. Gubanov won the event in 2:05.28 seconds, a state qualifying time. Tice’s time qualified her for sectionals. Flyer Haley McCurdy finished third and sophomore Julie Long fourth.

The Flyers finished 1-2 in the ninth event of the meet, the 200-yard freestyle relay.

β€œThe victories in that relay sealed the meet for us,” said Foley.

On the winning relay team was Tice, Tersoni, Kara McCurdy and Osborne.

The second place relay team consisted of Rachel Buck, Rebecca Fintonis, Haley McCurdy and Mary Zschau.

The Flyers finished second in the 200-yard medley relay with Olivia Nelson, Miranda, Parra, and Tersoni.

Framingham also finished second in the final event of the night, the 400-yard relay. The second place team consisted of Tersoni, Miranda, Tice and Kara McCurdy.
