SLIDESHOW: Pizza Box Toss, Recycling Obstacle Course, and Crafts

The annual Potter Road Elementary School Environmental Fair offered lots of activities for families Wednesday night.

More than a dozen students were lined up outside the elementary school waiting to throw a few pizza boxes in the school yard Wednesday night.

The Pizza Box Skee Ball game was one of the many activities and crafts at the annual Potter Road Elementary School Environmental Fair. The event offers fun and teachable moments.

Students learned that pizza boxes, not soaked in oil or grease, can be recycled.

“If the bottom has oil in the pizza box,” said one fourth grader. ”My family can recycle the top part of the box and put the bottom half in the trash.”

Another games was Food Container Bowling. The students learned take out food containers from restaurants can be rinsed out and re-used or made into a bowling game.

Inside the school, students turned cardboard egg cartons into flower bouquets and created masks using recycling craft supplies.

For each activity completed, students received a charm for a bracelet or a necklace.

Families and students could also stop by the “art” fish market and purchase salmon or haddock or learn about gardening from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society or Hanson’s Farm in Framingham.

A popular activity inside was a ”recycling-themed” obstacle course.

Outside PTO members were holding an electronics - everything with a plug - recycling fundraiser. For a small fee, individuals and families could drop off computers, TVs, small refrigerators, appliances and more.

Also in the parking lot Barbara Sherman of ReFoamIt was collecting Styrofoam packing, peanuts, meat trays, take-out food containers, and dozens upon dozens of Dunkin’ Donuts cups.

If you missed the event, ReFoamIt will be holding another free Styrofoam recycling event on July 25 at Grace Church in Framingham. The cost to recycle Styrofoam is bringing non-expired, non-perishable food items, said Sherman.
