Troopers Arrest Suspect After 70-Mile Chase on Mass Pike

The Woburn man is accused of stealing a taxi and driving at speeds over 100 miles per hour.

A Woburn man lead Massachusetts State Police on a 70-mile chase on the Mass Pike to Springfield, where he was arrested.

On Monday, around 3:30 a.m., Massachusetts State Police were informed that a Watertown taxi had been reported stolen.

Shortly thereafter, State Police spotted the vehicle traveling Westbound on the Mass Pike.

State Police attempted to stop the taxi.

The defendant allegedly continued at speeds over 100 miles per hour.

Eventually, the taxi pulled off the highway in Springfield, the defendant proceeded to flee on foot, and then was arrested.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announcedWelbert Nasser, 29, of Woburn was arraigned in Framingham District Court Monday, July 20, on charges of larceny of a motor vehicle, failure to stop, speeding, a marked lanes violation, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Judge David Cunis set bail at $1,000 cash and scheduled the next court hearing in Nasser’s case for Wednesday, August 12.

Assistant District Attorney Batool Raza is prosecuting the case.
