EMC in Talks About Merger With Dell

Hopkinton-based EMC is reportedly in talks about merging with Dell.

EMC Corp, based in Hopkinton, is in talks to merge with Dell Inc., a privately-held computer maker, the Boston Business Journal is reporting.

The merger would make it one of the “largest deals of its kind,” said the Boston Business Journal, citing a report from the Wall Street Journal.

It is unclear if the merger would include all of EMC, and the Journal points to rumors that churned starting last year after Elliott Management reportedly pressured EMC to spin off 80 percent into WMWare Inc., a cloud software company. Elliott owns 1.75 percent stake of EMC, adding 100,000 shares in June, said the Business Journal. EMC has a market capitalization of nearly $50 billion and shares were up more than seven percent on Wednesday.

EMC, in its company profile, describes itself as “a global leader in enabling businesses and service providers to transform their operations and deliver information technology as a service (ITaaS).”
