Holliston Police Seek K-9 Unit Through Grants, Donations

With recent searches and drug crimes, police hope to raise funds for a K-9 unit through donations and grants.

As drug detection and search-and-rescue assistance have increased in demand with the nature recent crimes, received a $500 grant from Browning-Ferris Industries last week for the station's K-9 unit.

Police intend to raise funds for the unit through donations and grants, and hope to avoid tapping into the town's budget. Chief John Moore hopes to win three federal grants in order to reach the $25,000 necessary to start the K-9 unit.

"There have been a number of instances recently where we could have used a dog on traffic stops and searches," Moore said.

Holliston police asked for assistance from neighboring towns' K-9 units who had hidden from police in the town's woods. 

"We want a dual-puropse dog that can do search-and-resuce as well as drug detection," Moore said.
