HOPKINTON, MA —Hopkinton High School was the first public school in Massachusetts to drop its indoor mask mandate. After a three-week trial, the school board voted to allow students to leave their masks off, if they choose, for the rest of the calendar year.

The Hopkinton School Committee voted Dec. 2 to extend the mask-lifting trial until winter break, and revisit it in the new year. The mask mandate will be reinstated on Jan. 3, 2022 and the school committee will review the mandate Jan. 6. The committee voted 4-0 to extend the trial, with one member abstaining from the vote.

Boston.com reports a majority of students said they felt the optional mask policy made their school day better, and that it was easier to learn different languages. A survey went out among both students and teachers.
