Malden Learns Of New Coronavirus Deaths

The city's death toll has risen as the number of confirmed cases surpassed 500 this week.

MALDEN, MA — The city said Tuesday it has learned of new coronavirus-related deaths over the past week. The death toll in Malden is now 10.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have lost a loved one as a result of this widespread virus," a statement on the city of Malden's Twitter page read.

As of Tuesday, April 21, there are 528 confirmed cases of the virus in Malden. City officials echoed health experts' advice to continue to comply with physical distancing guidelines and wear a mask in public.

The Department of Public Health said there were 1,556 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday, bringing the statewide case count to 41,199. The death toll across Massachusetts is now 1,961 after 152 new deaths were reported Tuesday.

Gov. Charlie Baker announced that all public and private schools, including in Malden, will be closed through the end of the school year in an effort to help slow the spread of the coronavirus during the pandemic.

Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Jeffrey Riley previously canceled MCAS testing for the remainder of the school year for grades 3-10. He has not yet made a decision regarding the competency determination for high school graduation.
