Martha's Vineyard Student Killed In Crash

Martha's Vineyard Regional High School student Jake Baird, 17, of Oak Bluffs, was killed in a crash in Chilmark; two others were injured.

CHILMARK, MA — An Oak Bluffs teenager was killed and two others were hurt in a crash on Martha's Vineyard in Chilmark Friday morning, police said. The deceased was identified as Jake Baird, 17, who was driving a sport utility vehicle when he lost control and struck a tree on Middle Road near Tea Road at about 8 a.m., police said.

"Preliminary investigation has revealed that Mr. Baird was operating the vehicle on Middle Road when the vehicle came into a curve, the vehicle traveled to the left side of the roadway, back to the right side, where it left the roadway, striking a tree and then down an embankment, coming to rest," Massachusetts State Police said in a statement.

Baird died at the scene, police said. The two injured occupants of his vehicle were not identified. Their injuries were described as minor and they were transported to Martha's Vineyard Hospital.

Baird was a student at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School.

"We are saddened by this loss to our school community and will make every effort to help you and your child," Martha's Vineyard Regional High School officials said in a statement to the school community.

The school has made grief counselors available to students.
