MEDFORD, MA — Eleven community members have been selected to serve on Medford’s Charter Study Committee.

The group will analyze the city’s current charter, gather input from the community, and ultimately propose recommendations on changes and content to the existing document.

Medford’s charter establishes its governing system and structure. It specifies term lengths for elected officials, the presence or absence of term limits, the composition of the City Council and School Committee, the City’s form of executive leadership, and more.

“The City’s Charter is not accurately representing the current needs of our community,” Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn said in a statement. “This group of community advocates, business leaders and residents will be able to take a critical eye to the current document, thoroughly analyze existing government responsibilities and provide recommendations on how to better serve the public. I thank each of them for taking on this enormous task in service of our City.”

The City is partnering with the Edward J. Collins, Jr. Center for Public Management at UMass Boston to provide technical expertise and support to the committee. The Collins Center has assisted several municipalities across the state with reviewing and modernizing their charters.
