5 Things: Capital Improvements; An MBTA Meeting

Here's Five Things. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2011.

Good morning. Here are five things to know today:

1. City Council Continues Capital Improvements Discussion: Before its regular meeting at 7 p.m. at City Hall tonight, the City Council will hold a committee of the whole meeting at 5:45 p.m. to discuss a proposal to build a new DPW garage, and plans for the Brooks Estate and Cemetery.

2. Snow/Rain: There's a 70 percent chance of snow or rain today, most likely before 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Highs today are expected around 40 degrees.

State politicians representing Medford will hold an informational meeting to discuss the MBTA's proposed solutions to its financial problems. Representatives Paul Donato, Carl Sciortino, Sean Garballey and State Senator Patricia Jehlen will be on hand for the informational meeting on Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Medford City Hall, according to a press release from Donato's office. The legislators will listen to input, concerns and suggestions from the public, the release said.

"Our goal is [to] get into construction this calendar year," Michael McBride, Green Line extension program manager, told the Boston Globe recently. The first phase of construction on the Green Line extension project, which will cost about $20 million, according to the Globe, will include bridge reconstruction, demolition work and site preparation.
