Around the Region: Arlington Natives Victims in Double Murder; Alleged Heroin Use at Somerville Market Basket

Here are some of the top headlines from just beyond Medford's city lines:

A police officer caught two men shooting up heroin in the men's room of the on Somerville Avenue, according to a police report. According to the report, an officer was on paid duty at the grocery store on Saturday afternoon, at about 1:45 p.m., when the store manager told the officer two men had entered a bathroom stall together, and the manager suspected they were using drugs. The officer went to the men's room and saw two sets of feet in the stall, the report says. When the officer knocked on the door, one of the men answered, "What do you want?" according to the report. After the officer threatened to kick the door in, the two men opened the stall, and the officer saw one of the men standing on the toilet bowl, with a used needle near the toilet bowl, according to the report.

The owners of Magee Construction Company in Arlington were shot and killed in Andover Wednesday. John and Geraldine Magee were found dead in their home by police about 9 a.m. Wednesday, police said. The Magees grew up in Arlington and also owned Magee Construction Company in Arlington, according to the Boston Business Journal. No one had been arrested in connection to the killings as of Friday afternoon.

Police took three into custody for allegedly making fraudulent emergency calls early Monday morning, after the Malden Fire Department reported eight fire boxes were pulled within a fifteen minute period around 1:00 a.m. The boxes were near the 500 block of Eastern Ave. between Daniels St. and Ferry St., and required the response of a deputy unit, two engines and a ladder. The suspects were cornered by firefighters just outside of on Ferry St., where they were contained until police arrived.

According to police, Alexander Gala, 17, of Wildwood St. in Winchester, was arrested and charged with armed robbery and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon (metal bug spray can) causing serious bodily injury on Wednesday. Woburn resident Jonathan Steven Philippe, 19, of Davis St. in Woburn, was also charged with armed robbery and assault and battery causing serious bodily injury for his role in the crime.

: Melrose firefighters rescued two dogs and knocked down a mattress fire in an East Street apartment Wednesday evening. No one was injured in the ordeal. Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained in its originating room, according to Fire Prevention Captain Ed Collina. “It was basically a room and contents fire,” he said. “Engine Three’s Lt. Dermott Madden and Firefighter Chris Walsh advanced the attack line through the front door to the apartment to exterminate a mattress on fire and the extension [of the fire] to the walls.”
