From The Bulletin Board: Trailblazing on the New Boston Greenbelt Trail

Explore the new Boston Greenbelt Trail. Walk up to 32 miles on May 30th through the community trails around Boston.

For the second year, the Boston Greenbelt Walk let’s others experience the beauty of the trails surrounding metropolitan Boston. TheFreeWalkers, a long-distance walking organization, and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), have organized their annual long-distance walking event scheduled for Saturday, May 30 to provide an opportunity for the public to experience the best of community trails that are in the process of being linked in an arc around Boston and within Route 128.

The walk starts in Newton and heads north then east ending in Malden - providing public transit options. Among the communities involved are Newton, Waltham, Lexington, Burlington, Woburn, Winchester, Medford, Melrose and Malden. MAPC is working closely to connect existing trails between towns to form a larger pedestrian trail up to 90 miles long.

The event is FREE and open to everyone. Participants are asked to start at either Waban MBTA Station (32-miles) or at Riverside (30-miles). The end of the walk is the Oak Grove Station on the Orange line. A schedule of anticipated milestones is provided on the event website -http://bostongreenbeltwalk.org. Participants can drop off at any time and use various means of transit to return or provide their own ride home. The event is self-supported, so participants are asked to be prepared and carry along their own supplies or purchase along the way.
