City Holiday Celebration Tonight, Basin Grate Thefts Hit Medford

Good morning, here are five things to know today:
Medford has seen a recent uptick in thefts of road-side catch basin grates, according to city officials. A total of 16 have been stolen in the last two months in all parts of the city, public works Commissioner John Buckley said in a phone interview Tuesday. "They're very heavy and difficult to move," Buckley said. "It has to be a two man job."
Head to City Hall between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. for the annual event, which will feature a visit from Santa and his Elves,, the Jingle Bell Decorated Tree Festival Fundraiser and lighting of a Christmas tree, Menorah and Kwanza Kinara.

3. City Council President, VP to Remain Same: In a caucus vote before the Medford City Council meeting on Nov. 22, Robert Maiocco was re-elected as president of the city council and Fred Dello Russo as vice president, Maiocco said in an email Monday. Paul Camuso, Dello Russo, Maiocco, councilor-elect Rick Caraviello and Breanna Lungo-Koehn attended the meeting and all voted for Maiocco and Dello Russo.
4. Warmer with a Chance of Showers: Highs are expected in the upper 50s today with a 30 percent chance of rain showers, according to the National Weather Service. If rain does come, it will most likely be in the morning.

Daniel J. Horgan, Jr. of Lynn died Monday. He was a prominent trial lawyer who went on to buy a total of seven Massachusetts newspapers, including the Medford Daily Mercury and the Malden Evening News. His funeral will be held at Solimine, Landergan and Richardson Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. in Lynn.
