Davis Square: Prepare For An Accordion Invasion

An armada of accordions descend on Davis for 2015's Squeezebox Slam on Saturday.

Well, there’s no way this shindig won’t be a little polarizing.

But at least Davis Square is in for some serious whimsy on Saturday, June 13, when accordion players from across the nation shall invade Somerville for the 2015 Squeezebox Slam.

Starting at noon, veteran squeeze-smiths and novices alike will roam Somerville streets, delighting most and likely irking a few who cross their paths. That is, until approximately 3 p.m., when they will all meet up in Davis Square for a massive group concert slated to end at 6 p.m.

The event is presented by the Nave Gallery and the Somerville Arts Council, and WBUR recently published an extensive history of the Squeezebox Slam, which occurred for the first time in 2011.

Back then, the idea was “getting 1,000 accordion players and taking over Somerville,” accordionist Michael McLaughlin told the NPR affiliate.
