Fire Log: Fire on Park Street and Lightning Strikes on Golden Ave.

A family of four on Park Street was displaced by a fire that started in the dryer Sunday night, according to fire reports.

Just after 8 p.m. Sunday, fire crews were called to 231 Park St. for a working fire in the basement, according to a report from the Medford Fire Department.

The fire had extended beyond the dryer to floor joists above, but was apparently knocked down by a water pipe that broke from the heat and acted as a sprinkler, Deputy Chief Scott Graham said in his report.

Fire was found inside the dryer. It was knocked down with an extinguisher, according to the report. Crews checked the home and found the fire had not spread through any walls.

The mother and three children who lived there declined assistance from Red Cross.

The children, who were home at the time, said they went down to the basement to change over some laundry and found smoke, according to the report. No one was hurt in the fire.

The fire began inside the dryer, but what caused it has not been determined, Graham said in the report.
