In 2008, Massachusetts voters approved a ballot measure that reduced possession of an ounce of marijuana from a criminal penalty to a non-criminal fine of $100.
Before the change, marijuana possession offenders faced up to 6 months in jail and a $500 fine. Marijuana advocates rejoiced when the law was changed, while some in the law enforcement community expressed concern.
