Medford Police Warn Of Uptick In 'Grandparent Scam'

MEDFORD, MA — The Medford Police Department is warning residents of an uptick in the so-called "Grandparent Scam."

Typically, the scammer will call and pretend to be the target's grandchild or someone on behalf of the grandchild. The "grandchild" will claim to be in some sort of trouble and say that they need a large sum of money to get out of the situation, police said.

Most of the time, the scammers will use actual information to target those who have a grandchild living in a different area or on vacation. They will ask for money in wires or gift cards over the phone; however, there have been times when the scammers requested that cash be sent in packages or picked up by a courier.

The "grandchild" will insist that the victim does not tell anyone that they are sending the money, police said.
