Medford Set to Implement Property Tax Surcharge

The annual surcharges would raise an estimated $1 million in Medford for open space protection, among other vital needs.

City officials in Medford are nearly ready to implement a property tax surcharge after voters approved the measure during the recent municipal election in November.

Voters passed the Community Preservation Act, approving a 1.5 percent surcharge for open space, historic preservation, affordable housing, and recreation projects.

The annual surcharges would raise an estimated $1 million in Medford for open space protection, among other vital needs.

The surcharge will kick in come July 1. It would cost homeowners an additional $53 per year. Low-income property owners are exempt.

Malden also voted in favor of the Community Preservation Act. Woburn voted it down.
