Medford Teen Found Alive in Maine

UPDATE, 3:30 p.m.: According to the Maine Warden Service, Nicholas Joy was found "alive and well on the Caribou Pond Road," which is a snowmobile trail on the west side of Sugarloaf.

Joy was taken to a local hospital for observation. The snowmobiler who found Joy was Joel Paul from Massachusetts.

UPDATE, 11 a.m.: Details about Nicholas Joy's experience on Sugarloaf are emerging following a news conference in Maine Tuesday morning.

WBZ is reporting Joy was found around 9 a.m. Tuesday and that the Medford teen built a snow cave for himself, where he stayed for two nights.

Joy reportedly got lost Sunday after going down a trail on Sugarloaf and went out of bounds. On Tuesday morning he left the cave after hearing the sound of snowmobiles and walked in that direction, according to WBZ.

WBZ reports the snowmobiler who encountered Joy was not part of the search party.

ORIGINAL STORY, 9:47 a.m.: WBZ is reporting that Nicholas Joy, the 17-year-old Medford High School senior who went missing at Sugarloaf ski area in Western Maine Sunday, has been found alive.

The news station reported that Joy is "safe" but no other details have been released about how he was located.

Joy was reportedly skiing with his father and had been last seen on the Timberline chairlift at the mountain at around 12:40 p.m. Sunday.

Dozens of ski patrol members and Maine warden officials were involved in the search in bad weather conditions and difficult mountain terrain.
