Week in Review: Bestsellers Cafe, DPW Yard Demolition OK'd, Arantxa King Competes in London

Some of the top stories from Medford this week.

City Councilors approved the demolition of the city's public works facility, but an attempt to funding preliminary design work for a new facility stalled Tuesday. During its meeting Tuesday night, the council unanimously approved a request from the Mayor to use $160,000 to demolish the yard, and a second request to spend $63,000 relocating the condemned. In 2009, six of the vehicle bays were condemned after the roof began to cave in. In late July, Mayor Michael McGlynn called for the remaining 11 bays to be shuttered and for the yard to be demolished.

Police discovered a Medford man had two outstanding warrants after they approached him for allegedly evading his fare at the Malden Center T station Monday night. Kynly Cazeau, 25, was sought on warrants stemming from both breaking and entering and class B drug distribution charges, and was arrested and brought to Roxbury District Court by MBTA police, according to a transit police report.

A Look Inside the New Bestsellers Cafe in Medford: Rob Dilman has a lot of patience. The owner of Bestsellers Cafe at has waited since May 2007 -- over five years -- to re-open as renovations to the building snailed along. The store, located on High Street near Governors Avenue, finally held a soft opening last week and will have a grand opening this weekend. As Dilman sat down for an interview Thursday afternoon, he didn't seem bothered by the long wait -- he was just happy to have the cafe open. "It feels nice," Dilman said, sitting at a table by the store's front window. "It doesn’t feel like five years."

Medford's Arantxa King Last One Out of Long Jump Final in London: Medford's Arantxa King missed qualifying for the Summer Olympics final in the long jump by the smallest of margins during competition Tuesday in London. King, 22, representing Bermuda, leaped 6.40 meters in her first jump, which ended up being her best of the competition. She had a line violation on her second attempt and covered 6.20 meters in her third and final attempt. The 6.40 meters jump was good for an overall finish of 13th -- one spot short of making the final round competition tomorrow. Veronika Shutkova of Belarus earned the last spot in finals, according to official results; though the results show her best jump measured at 6.40 meters, as well.

Council Approves 'Spirit' of 8-Figure High School Science Lab Overhaul: The city council gave a partial endorsement Tuesday of renovations to Medford High School science labs that will cost at total $10 million to $13 million. Project managers showed three options to the council for the overhaul, which will receive 60 percent funding from the state through a grant. But instead of choosing a preferred option, the council decided to unanimously vote in favor of “the spirit of the project” during a committee of the whole meeting Tuesday night at City Hall. The proposed options hadn’t been brought to the school committee yet, and it irked some councilors to be asked to vote on it before it went through the committee. “We’ve been told by the Mayor that this project has the support of the school committee,” Councilor Paul Camuso said. “But there’s a pretty big disparity (between options).”
