Today is Monday, Monday, Feb. 14 and here are today's five fast facts, updated Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. with the full list of alderman at-large candidates:
The women come and go, talking of Michelangelo: It's a day for love songs. Happy Valentine's Day—may your mermaids sing to you. For you golden years folks, EPOCH is holding a today at the Milano Senior Center from 1:30-2:30 p.m. (reservations required) serving petit fours, a small confection, and tea. Attendees are invited to bring a memento of a current or past love to share with others at your table.
Is it Bacon Day? I bet you have a lot things planned for your S.O. this Valentine's Day, right? ... right? If you somehow forgot, A) Hallmark is very upset with you (no, the greeting card company, not the hospital company), and B) Melrose Patch can help, with our round-up of for your sweetie, plus ideas for tonight. (Guys, a little tip: If you're planning on making some sort of declaration tonight, don't do it when Jaws pops out of the water. Go the Mr. Darcy route with a simple and heartfelt "I love ... Remove all gold-fringed flags from the states! Candidates for alderman at-large, relax: Basil Marceaux will be pretty tough to top. At tonight's aldermen's Appropriations Committee meeting, the board will invite those who've submitted resumes for the seat vacated by Paul Brodeur last month. The candidates the aldermen will vote on at their next meeting on Feb. 22 are:
- Leo Greene of Grove Street
- Tom Litrenta of Nowell Road
- Michael Zwirko of Derby Road
- Jaclyn Lavender Bird of Lebanon Street
- Francis Murphy of Beech Avenue
- Spencer DeShields of Pearl Street
- Robert M. Ruzzo of Warwick Road
- Christopher Oatis of Pleasant Street
- Dr. Gene Yee of Franklin Street
That's nine candidates for one seat. Interesting fact: In the last biennial city election, when all four alderman at-large seats were up for grabs, there were five candidates in total.

Real Genius: If you see a Melrose High School student pulling one of these during a study session, it's because the time has come to register for the Spring 2011 AP Exams. .
I am cold, out waiting for the day to come: Might have jumped the gun a bit when I mentioned the Big Melt, considering tomorrow will be cold again ... but soon enough. Later this week. Meanwhile, enjoy today—it'll be mostly cloudy and there's a slight chance of some rain showers, but the high will be near 46.
