Carpentry Shop At Northeast Answers The Call

A mobile podium for use at ceremonies was completed and delivered just in time for Veterans Day.

The following was submitted by the Northeast Metropolitan Vocational School District:

Melrose— 16 Nov 2021 — After receiving a request from Melrose Director of Veterans Services Karen Burke to build and supply a mobile podium for use at ceremonies, the carpentry students and faculty got to work.

The podium was completed and delivered just in time for Veterans Day. The students and faculty supplied the labor and the materials were paid for with a donation from an anonymous Melrose business owner.

Northeast Metro Tech High School is a four year public regional vocational high school. The Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational School District is comprised of 12 communities North of Boston which send students of diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds. Understanding diversity, the faculty and administration strive to provide services and programs to meet students needs in the areas of vocational, academic, physical, social, ethical, moral, and emotional development.

Students attend classes in a more than 50-year-old building that requires educational, capital and maintenance improvements. The new school will address the current facility’s outdated building systems, including much-needed ADA accessibility and code compliance upgrades, in addition to overcrowding.

The new school will feature 21st-century learning environments, improved Individualized Education Program (IEP) accommodations, state-of-the-art shop space, expanded program offerings, a new primary access roadway from Farm Street to reduce traffic congestion, a full-size gym, a 750-seat auditorium, outdoor space for learning and a new cafeteria.

With a focus on sustainability, the project is targeting LEED Silver+ certification with energy efficient mechanical systems, provisions for solar panels, and vegetated roofs. The compact, four-story design will featurean upper-level courtyard, roof decks, and a double-height library rotunda.
