REVERE, MA — A "frightened" coyote pup received a second chance thanks to a state trooper who rescued the stranded animal on a busy road near Suffolk Downs. Police said Trooper Carlo Mastromattei found the pup on the Revere Beach Parkway Sunday after a passerby mistook it for an injured dog. The pup was in danger of being hit by a car.

"Trooper Mastromattei ... saw a small frightened, solitary coyote pup," State Police said in a statement. "The pup's mother was nowhere in sight."

Police said the trooper tried calling wildlife officials but no one was available so he called Lisa Cutting at Ocean View Kennels in Revere. Cutting drove to the scene and helped Mastromattei secure the animal in a crate.

"But the baby coyote's adventure was far from over," police said. "Trooper Mastromattei took the pup to his girlfriend AnnBeth (the couple are devoted animal lovers), and the pup stayed in the crate in her house overnight."

The pup was then transported to Tufts Wildlife Clinic in Grafton and found to be healthy.

"The little guy is going to be transferred to the care of a wildlife specialist in the Berkshires, who will rehabilitate him and acclimate him to life in the wild, where he will eventually be released to live out his life," police said. "The Department offers its sincere thanks to Trooper Mastromattei, his girlfriend, Ocean View Kennels, and Tufts for their compassionate care for this beautiful little creature."
